Bow-Drill Body Position

Getting into the right body position for bow-drill is an aspect of getting to grips with this technique that many need help with.

As you will see in the video above, once you find the position allowing you to be both effective and comfortable, you can start having success with the technique.

First, though, you need to know what the right position actually is. Also, you must learn how to assemble the bow-drill parts easily. Then, you have to keep the whole set together.

One area people struggle with initially is getting the drill into the string of the bow.  This is covered in the above video.

I then show how everything can be clamped into a solid position. This allows you to bow freely and efficiently, making it much more likely you will create an ember.

The video above is part of a whole module on Friction Fire from the 12-module Online Elementary Wilderness Bushcraft course.

The Online Elementary Wilderness Bushcraft Course provides comprehensive training in the cornerstone bushcraft skills, not only fire skills. The aim is for students to use the course materials in the Online Elementary to develop a solid foundation of cornerstone bushcraft skills and know-how, on which they can rely during their outdoor life.
